Covid-19 - The Impact on Cyprus' SMEs Tourism Enterprises – Lessons to be Learned

Abstract

The objective of this work is to identify the major lessons learned from the Cyprus’s tourism Small & Medium Enterprises (SMEs), following the recent Covid-19 pandemic. Further, the purpose was to reach out to SMEs owners, managers, and entrepreneurs in order to identify specific issues during and after Covid-19 pandemic, such as management practices in terms of acquiring professional assistance, applying online sales, their opinion about the measures applied by the Republic of Cyprus, and the European Union, as well their knowledge about the Recovery and Resilience Plan (RRP). A quantitative research method and a probability sampling methods have been applied. The research has reached out to SMEs with the valuable assistance of the Cyprus Chamber of Commerce and Industry (CCCI). Lack of access to financial support and professional assistance, and poor knowledge of the RRP, calling for a more effective communication approach by the national authorities has been identified. Tourism’s SMEs sustainable development is highly influenced by acquiring the relevant assistance, calling for all stakeholders to apply the appropriate practices and measure in order to enhance Tourism’s SMEs sustainable development.

Dr. Amvrosios Prodromou, Neapolis University Pafos - Cyprus

Dr. Amvrosios Prodromou holds a DBA degree with sepcialisation in SMEs, MBA in Marketing and a Bachelors in Business Administration. He is a lecturer at Neapolis University Pafos (NUP). He is a member of the Cyprus Chamber Commerce and Industry (CCCI), and he runs his own business consulting firm. He has published several articles in academic journal and participated in a large number of European projects.

Dr. Ifigenia Efthimiou, Neapolis University - Pafos, Cyprus

Dr. Ifigenia Efthimiou holds a doctorate degree in "Design and Analysis of
Experiments" with a grade of "Excellent," a Masters degree in "Statistics and Data
Analysis," and a Bachelors degree from the Department of Statistics and Actuarial -
Financial Mathematics.
She has extensive academic experience from both public and private universities.
She is currently a lecturer in Statistics and Mathematics at Neapolis University Pafos.
She is a published author having authored scientific papers for prestigious
international journals such as "Statistica Sinica" and "Metrika"

Dr. Sotiris Apostolopoulos, Neapolis University - Pafos, Cyprus

Dr. Sotiris Apostolopoulos is a Lecturer in Entrepreneurship and Development at Neapolis University Paphos, Cyprus. He also acts as Coordinator of the Undergraduate Programs in Business Administration of the Department of Economics and Business for the same University. He specialises in rural entrepreneurship, European policies and the socio-economic development of the rural areas with emphasis on private and social health enterprises
