Finland has lacked economic growth for almost two decades. Universities of applied sciences can help facilitate growth. This article examines misaligned expectations of value creation between SMEs and universities. The study focuses on LAB University of Applied Sciences in South Karelia and Päijänne Tavastia, Finland. LAB runs about 200 RDI projects annually, several of which aim to strengthen SMEs’ innovation capabilities and improve cooperation that creates business opportunities. Despite extensive cooperation, UASs and SMEs often differ on what creates value. UASs tend to approach companies with solutions, while companies expect needs-led dialogue. The research asks: What should change to create more mutual value in UAS–SME relationships? Data include findings from regional RDI projects (2023–2025) and sixteen theme-based interviews with LAB staff, other stakeholders, and company representatives. The data were analyzed thematically as a qualitative case. The results suggest that companies want universities to be more customer-focused and proactive in outreach. Companies also need to communicate their needs and participation conditions more clearly in publicly funded RDI projects.
