A Physical Chemistry Escape Room With 4 Metals

Natural sciences such as chemistry are inherently fascinating, but they can also appear complex—often requiring substantial prior knowledge before one can fully understand the phenomena involved. To make scientific topics more accessible and reduce apprehension, game-based approaches have proven highly effective. Problem-solving and experimentation within a gamified environment tend to be intrinsically motivating, encouraging participants to engage actively—often learning without even realizing it. This paper presents a physical chemistry escape room consisting of five task stations. The stations can be played sequentially (1 to 5) or in a parallel rotation format, where four are completed before finishing together at the final station. The thematic focus of the escape room is on metals, with four key metals—aluminium, copper, iron, and zinc—at the centre of each station’s learning objectives. At each station (approximately 3–4 m² in size), players are challenged to solve riddles—either clearly visible or hidden (e.g., in envelopes, inside or under books, in newspapers, or on the walls)—by using information provided on surrounding posters and materials. The tasks are designed to convey scientific knowledge related to the four metals, such as properties including mass and magnetism. Activities include crossword puzzles, numeric or pictorial codes, combinatory questions, and hands-on physical experiments. Examples of these experiments include determining the density of metals using various methods or constructing a lemon battery at the final station. The game has been successfully tested with children aged 6 to 12 years. With slight adjustments to pacing, it is expected to be also suitable for older participants—for instance, as a quick and enjoyable way to review previously learned chemistry content. Overall feedback has been very positive, and it appears that all participants leave the game with enhanced knowledge about the four featured metals.
