Abstract

This study aimed to design a mathematical problem-based digital game focused on ratio and proportion, incorporating environmental awareness contexts. Using a design-based research methodology, four expert researchers and 24 middle school students participated in the evaluation, offering valuable feedback for refining the game. Data collected through observations and interviews were analyzed qualitatively using open and axial coding. The study’s findings emphasize that effective digital game design integrates three key areas: foundational knowledge of digital gaming, informed by educational technology and game-based learning experts; mathematical theories and approaches, developed with input from mathematics educators; and practical, hands-on knowledge, gathered through student involvement. Additionally, the inclusion of entertainment elements and game mechanics ensured the balance between engagement and educational value. The results underscore the importance of interdisciplinary collaboration in creating educational digital games that are both pedagogically effective and engaging for students.
